Our History

In 1947 Norman Ferns left the army with no job to go to. So he went to his Aunt & Uncle for a loan of £50 to buy a lorry for the purpose of transporting textiles for the many mills in the area.

This was a good earner, however Norman was frequently been asked if he would move the mill workers after work, soon realizing that this was a better proposition than transporting textiles. So that’s what he did. Within 10 years more vehicles were on the scene along with more staff, however this was soon not enough. Norman realized that he needed a storage facility, so in the mid 50’s he bought haulage yard along with buildings to house his Lorries and customers furniture.

In the mid 60’s business was booming and especially the storage side of things, so Norman bought the textile mill next door to his current premises for the purpose of heated storage and greater capacity. Also in the mid 60’s his son Norman “Barry” Ferns joined his farther in the business & it went from strength to strength.

In 1986 sadly Norman Ferns passed away leaving Barry with the task of running the business for the foreseeable future, and in May 1999 Daniel Ferns (Barry’s son) joined the company as the third generation, still keeping up the company tradition of excellent service.

In October 2015 Daniel’s Brother Mathew joined the team after training for many years as a joiner bringing those valuable skills with him. In November 2018 Ben Elliott, a qualified Piano Tuner Joined our team.

In June 2021 Barry was forced to take a step back due to ill health, so to help fill his huge boots, Daniel’s partner Holly took over the phones and administration followed by Daniel’s cousin (Normans granddaughter) Emily also assisting. Following Barry’s sad passing in April 2023 the whole team are determined to do him proud & continue his drive for the highest of standards.
